Lou Gehrig Luckiest Man Speech

Lou Gehrig Luckiest Man Speech
Lou Gehrig Luckiest Man Speech

On July 4, 1939, baseball legend Lou Gehrig was honored in Yankee Stadium. Gehrig hit .340, which is 17th all-time. Not a speed guy, Gehrig still gathered 103 stolen bases in his career and tripled at least 10 times in nine different seasons, once hitting 20.

In fact, Gehrig is 33rd all-time with 163 triples. The only player in history with at least 500 doubles, 150 triples and 475 home runs, other than Gehrig, is Stan Musial.

Gehrig had eight different 200-hit seasons while also drawing over 100 walks in a season 11 different times.

The two-time MVP led the AL in the following categories at least once in his illustrious career: Runs (four times), hits (once), doubles (twice), home runs (three times), RBI (five times), walks (three times), average (once), OBP (five times), slugging (twice), OPS (three times), OPS+ (three times), total bases (four times), times on base (six times) and several other measures.

Gehrig won seven AL pennants with the Yankees and six World Series titles. Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games before the disease ended his iconic streak. Gehrig’s simple, elegant language — and an iconic rendition of it by actor Gary Cooper in the film “Pride of the Yankees” — have helped the speech live on for decades.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the moment, Richard Sandomir looked at the history of the speech. KG: Lou Gehrig lived in the public eye but did not love the spotlight in the way his Yankees teammate Babe Ruth did. Do you think Gehrig was reluctant to deliver the speech that day?

KG: The iconic line from the speech is, “Yet today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.” RS: Well, it’s how many people he thanked, and the language that he used. I mean, he remembers his mother-in-law and the groundskeepers in this speech. RS: [Gehrig] wasn’t known for making speeches. RS: It’s shorter. It thanks fewer people. You just wonder, do people remember the speech because they heard Cooper or because they’ve heard the few clips left of Gehrig from the newsreels? KG: It sounds like a lot of people heard this speech from Cooper himself.

So yeah, I think Cooper is the reason that the speech has lasted and endured as well. That has not endured — whether Raymond Massey or Daniel-Day Lewis or whoever’s played Lincoln, have any of them delivered a speech as memorably as Gary Cooper did of Gehrig’s speech?

Here's the full text of Gehrig's speech:

Sure, I'm lucky.

Tourism bosses hope the Tour de France will showcase England's beautiful scenery to the world. The Tour de France is two races in one. Councils and tourism bodies hosting (however fleetingly) the wheels of the Tour de France riders are lining up to show off their wares. The cyclists will fly past hundreds of bikes painted yellow throughout Yorkshire, and in Silsden there is a warning to those speeding ahead of the crowd One of the hundreds of bikes painted yellow throughout Yorkshire Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said the county had been seeking to "invigorate and galvanise the Yorkshire tourism industry" since 2009. To mark the Tour de France, the cafe has been decorated with the Tour's 'King of the Mountains' polka dots.

The tour will also pass through the Pennine village of Haworth which was home to the Brontës, arguably the world's most famous literary family. After reaching Sheffield on Sunday, the Tour ups sticks and moves down south to the university city of Cambridge. Before they depart, some riders might just notice some of the 2,000 mini yellow, green and polka dot jerseys which have been knitted to form bunting in the city. Artist Nicola Burrell, who came up with the design, said: "I've taken inspiration from the shapes of the bicycles, riders and slip streams, and I think the design represents the dynamism and excitement which is the Tour de France." The boundary wall, railings and gates of the castle have recently been restored - just in time, says Uttlesford District Council's leader Jim Ketteridge, for the Tour de France. As is a polka dot paint job.

How to Have Fun While Home Alone
Clean up your room. Change into some comfy clothing. Try to find the great medium between pretty and comfy (not like going-out pretty, but like you would be proud to casually-hang-out-with-your-friends pretty). Remember, if you have someone coming over (i.e gardener, scheduled friend, nurse, etc), you don't want to answer the door in revealing, inappropriate clothing!

1. Give yourself a buffet choice of snack foods. Choose some nail polish that you like.
2. Turn on your favourite song, play along with your favourite band, and dance around the room. If you do not know how to play an instrument, then do the same thing without an instrument.

3. Video chat or IM with friends.

Do you mope around because you don't have privacy in a shared room? If you want privacy now, this article will help you! There is more to life then just sitting around moping all day. (Life is very boring that way!)

1. Clean your room. There is nothing like a clean bedroom to improve your outlook.

2. Talk to your parents about the problem. Maybe there is a spare room that could be converting into a bedroom of you or your sibling!

3. Talk to your siblings. Perhaps

4. Spend time alone. When you get the chance, enjoy time by yourself. Take a walk, relax, and enjoy the scenery!

How to Impress Secondary School Girls

How to Impress Secondary School Girls
How to Impress Secondary School Girls
Impressing a girl in secondary school is a whole lot different than impressing one in primary school. If a girl can't like you for who you really are then she's not worth it.

1. Talk to the girl. Make friends with her but try to move quite fast because once you're her friend, you're stuck in the friend zone.

2. Go public with your relationship after a little while. If you feel she may have a point, make sure she likes you for all the right reasons.

3. Never try to make her jealous by hitting on her friends.

4. Forget the mantra "Treat 'em mean to keep 'em keen". Many girls like sweet boys that tell them they're pretty and comments like that.

5. Try not to get jealous if your girlfriend is talking to another boy.

How to Hide Your Tears

How to Hide Your Tears
How to Hide Your Tears
How to Hide Your Tears - Doesn't it just feel bad when your face is red, wet, and tears are falling out of your eyes in front of everyone? This is going to help you never have that feeling again.
1. If the tears are about to fall, try not to blink. If this can't be pulled off, head straight to a nearby vacant restroom. If you're in a public place, try to go to a restroom that is free of the 'gossip girls', but it would be fine to go to one where girls are nicer and won't be mean to you for crying..

2. Once you're there, try to find a stall immediately. Use a bigger one for more room. It would help to bring your purse or bag, already equipped with paper towels. If not, grab some on your way in.

3. "It's okay to fall, when in the stall!" Sit somewhere- on the seat, or if you have a binder or towel, on the ground. Just keep blotting and try to use tissues. Try to put your bag or purse in front of you first, so no one can see your feet. If you have earphones listen to songs from your phone or ipod until you feel good.

4. Get out of the stall when you're sure you're okay. Splash some cold water on your face to relieve the 'crying face'. Dry your face.

5. Attempt a smile as genuine as possible and think of something that makes you laugh.

6. Try to carry water or have plans to fresh water routes. Make sure you drink. Afterward, try to suck on little hard sweet candy, when you're finally ready to go. Go. No one will really know you were crying in the first place.

7. Smile. When you smile your body lets out a happy hormone, if you can't crack a smile hold a pencil between your teeth- this uses enough muscles to trick your body into thinking you're smiling.

How to Have a Successful Year - Charles de Lint said, “Life is like art. Dream again because dreams do come true. The book is called Opportunity…”

1. Don't carry extra luggage. Be courteous. Don’t ever forget the fact that life is unpredictable. Thomas Fuller said, “All doors open to courtesy.”
2. Follow credible footsteps. Make sure the people you admire and emulate have a track record of hard work, honesty, integrity, diligence and success. Tyron Edwards said, “People never improve unless they look to some standard or example higher and better than themselves,” while Charles A. Fowler said, “The best teachers of humanity are the lives of great men.”
3. Render help freely. Assist people without insisting to be paid. With time, your selfless attitude will be rewarded beyond your imagination. Have a good name. The book of Proverbs chapter 22 verse 1a says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches…”
4. Finish what you start. Endeavour to have ‘the finishing spirit.’

Happy Forth of July

Happy Forth of July - Kate Hamilton Pardee began organizing Nantucket's July 4 celebrations last fall, but at the last minute Hurricane Arthur upended her carefully made plans.

As the hurricane moved up the Atlantic Coast, it was expected to skirt Cape Cod and Nantucket, where the National Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning. Officials in communities across Cape Cod pulled the plug on fireworks displays scheduled for Friday night.

"Mother Nature is her own woman," said Pardee, director of Nantucket Visitor Services.

Hurricane Arthur
Arthur, the first hurricane arthur forces of the 2014 Atlantic season, was downgraded to a tropical storm, then a post-tropical storm early Saturday as it raced over Nova Scotia in Canada. Arthur had 65 mph winds but was losing its tropical identity, according to the National Hurricane Center's 7 a.m. CDT advisory. Arthur was located 50 miles north-northwest of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and was moving north-northeast at 23 mph. Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and parts of New Brunswick in Canada were still under tropical storm warnings, but all tropical storm warnings were dropped for Massachusetts.

A wind warning issued by Environment Canada on Saturday said strong winds were expected through the overnight period. "Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds." Winds ahead of the storm were gusting to 95 km/h at Baccaro Point in southwest Nova Scotia. "Rain will continue heavy through New Brunswick today," said Coade. New Brunswick is forecast to see the highest rainfall amounts from Arthur while Nova Scotia will bear the brunt of the highest winds. The Canadian Hurricane Centre forecasts strong winds for much of the Maritimes, with the stronger winds possibly gusting to 120 km/h over exposed coastal locations of southwestern Nova Scotia.

How to Calculate Age From Date of Birth

How to Calculate Age From Date of Birth - Have you ever forgotten your father's age? What about a teacher that refuses to tell you her age, but tells you her birth date? This is how to find a person's age by using dates and simple math.

1. Find out the date the person was born.

2. Subtract that date from the current year. For example, if the birth year was 1998, subtract 1998 from 2013. The result is their age. The difference from the previous example is 15. A person born in 1998 would be 15 in 2013. More often, a person who does not reveal their age may reveal the year in which they were a certain age. For example, your teacher might let slip that he graduated from high school in 1980. From this, you can infer that he was about 18 years old in that year.

3. Subtract the given year from the current year, as before. In this example, 2013 minus 1980 equals 33.

4. Now, add that sum to the age given. In this case, add 33 to 18. The result, 51, is your teacher's age.

Sure, you can buy made-in-America kids' shoes, but this is the first kids' sneakers' line where everything is produced domestically. Made in America is a growing drumbeat that brands big and small can no longer ignore. For Rogers, 52, a former senior sales executive at sneaker maker Converse and Saucony, it's also a way to get his brand to stand out in Sneaker Land. The boxes, which have an American flag insignia, cost almost twice as much as similar boxes made overseas, Rogers says. But the company decided that the made-in-America shoes just couldn't be sold in imported boxes. The shoes will mostly be sold at kids' shoe boutiques, but later this summer will be available on Nordstrom.com. The shoes also are sold on Shoebuy.com. Rogers says he's targeting "enlightened" moms 25 to 35, who buy shoes for their kids.

ShoeString also makes Zooligans, canvas shoes with animal imagery on them, which are not made in America. By the Christmas holidays, Rogers hopes to be selling suede kids' shoes made in America. While Huntsville has many large American flag displays to show civic pride, including the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and the downtown Veterans Memorial, the small displays of the flag on the front porches show the pride of the American Dream, the home. To make sure you show your American Flag correctly, there are a few guidelines to follow. For examples, according to the American Legion Flag Code, the blue field of stars on the flag should be displayed to the observer's left, which is the flag's "own right." Why? The right hand, to any observer, is the observer's left. The American Legion, the nation's largest veterans organization, is largely considered the go-to source for questions regarding the proper display of the American flag.

Declaration of Independence Signed

Declaration of Independence
Declaration of Independence

When copying it out, Jefferson included text (indicated with underlining) that appeared in the version submitted to Congress by the so-called Committee of Five charged with producing a declaration, but that Congress removed before approving the final version. Next year, the library’s copy will appear in an exhibit at the British Library — the document’s first trip to George III’s home turf. To call the loans to the British Library a coup is perhaps understatement. The Declaration of Independence is on loan from the New York Public Library. The text is that which Thomas Jefferson copied in his own hand, incorporating changes by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. It is particularly interesting because it shows passages subsequently excised in Congress, such as Jefferson's lengthy condemnation of slavery. Neither document has been in the UK before. Breay, the library's lead curator of medieval and earlier manuscripts, who is curating the show, said the documents represented "an amazing opportunity" for the British public. Colonists in America were driven by a desire and demand to have the same rights as the English, the rights embodied in Magna Carta.

There are four copies of Magna Carta, which was issued by King John and established for the first time that the king was subject to the law, not above it. "There are four copies of the 1215 Magna Carta, one of the most famous historical documents in the world – two at the British Library and one each in Lincoln and Salisbury cathedrals." Breay said she hoped the exhibition would encourage people to think about the document in a broader way. Tony Marx, president of New York's public library, said he was proud that his organisation was taking part. "The bedrock of our modern day society is rooted in the historic documents of the Magna Carta, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights – the result of brave citizens who understood the importance of change and reform." The Magna Carta exhibition will run from 13 March 2015 to 1 September.

Read below for help on how to avoid saying bad words

In many circles, people who swear are seen as uncultured, uneducated, unrefined, immature or worse. Additionally, if you are using swear words directed at other people, you may be seen as a bully, unreasonable, or abusive. Figure out your triggers and bad habits. Get a notebook and a pen, and spend a week noting your cussing. Enlist help (optional). Tell some trusted, kind friends and family that you want to stop cursing and enlist their help. If you do this step, realize that you will be getting critiqued. If not, skip this step. Brainstorm alternatives to your cussing. Figure out other, healthier ways to express your feelings. You can also substitute more neutral words like darn, rats, crud, oh man, lame, shiz, sugar, shoot etc. in place of your normal cuss words.

How to Stay Out of Trouble

How to Stay Out of Trouble
How to Stay Out of Trouble
To learn how to stay out of trouble, See Step :
\
1. to get started. If you have a sense that something is wrong, even if you can't pinpoint why, then chances are, you're right. Spend time with your family. It's really true that idle hands make the devil's work, and the more time you spend with your family, the less time you'll be spending looking for and getting into trouble. Have family night every weekend, time for doing chores during the week, and time for helping out your siblings at least once or twice a week.

2. Avoid the wrong people. The people who may be getting you in trouble may be your very best friends. Sure, if you and all of your friends have decided to stay out of trouble together, that's another thing, but how often does that happen? You may think that you can decide to stay on track while staying friends with people who are always getting into trouble, but unfortunately, you'll still be associated with them, and will be much more likely to get in trouble for something they did, even if you were innocent. Make friends who are positive influences. If you're friends with people who are good students, have meaningful goals, and live positive lives, then you're very likely to have them rub off on you. If you're only friends with negative troublemakers, then you're much more likely to be one. Soon, you'll see that you're staying out of trouble by doing fun things with new, likeminded people.

3. Develop positive relationships with your teachers. If you're off to a rough start with some of your teachers, know that you can win them over with enough hard work and effort, even if it does take time. Being on your teacher's good sides is an excellent way to stay out of trouble.Your role model can be your mom or dad, an older sibling, a teacher at school, a family friend in the neighborhood, a club or church leader, a grandparent, or really anyone who inspires you to do well in life.

Hurricane Arthur Forces

Hurricane Arthur
Hurricane Arthur
Today News In USA - As Hurricane Arthur muscled up early Thursday evening, heavy rain began to fall along the coast of North Carolina. The National Weather Service in Wilmington said 1 1/3 inches of rain fell during one hour Thursday afternoon. The office also tweeted that there was some flooding just south of downtown. The storm's strongest sustained winds were 90 mph CNN correspondents at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington and Atlantic Beach said most people in those two tourist destinations were heeding authorities' calls to stay out of the surf. "We starting to see the water come up a little further," said Marc Leford, the facilities manager at the Shell Island Resort in Wrightsville Beach. "The guests are hanging tight. They seem to be having a good time. They're ready to wait it out." The storm, which developed into a hurricane early in the day, was expected to grow to Category 2 strength with winds of 105 mph before grazing the coast, then steadily weaken as it is pushed out to sea by a cold front, meteorologists said. Arthur is expected to bring storm surges of up to 5 feet, as well as large, damaging waves, high winds and dangerous rip currents that authorities warned could sweep even the strongest swimmers out to sea. Hurricane Arthur is strengthening over the Atlantic, with forecasters predicting it will become a strong Category 2 as it threatens to deliver North Carolina a glancing blow on Independence Day. The hurricane's maximum sustained winds Thursday were 90 mph as the storm's outer bands started to reach southern parts of North Carolina. Category 2 hurricanes pack winds of more than 96 mph. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Arthur is about 225 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras and moving north around 13 mph with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph. Predicted heavy rains and winds prompted thousands of vacationers and residents to leave parts of the state's popular flood-prone Outer Banks. Hatteras island was under a mandatory evacuation order for visitors and residents, with officials asking an estimated 35,000 people to leave through North Carolina Route 12, the only road on and off the island. Forecasters expect Arthur to whip past the Outer Banks -- a 200-mile string of narrow barrier islands with about 57,000 permanent residents -- on Friday without making landfall but still bringing rain, heavy winds, storm surge and dangerous rip tides. Before the storm hit, tourism officials had expected 250,000 people to travel to the Outer Banks for the holiday weekend. Gov. Pat McCrory warned people not to risk their safety by trying to salvage their barbecues and pre-paid beach vacations.

"Don't put your stupid hat on," McCrory said Wednesday, urging swimmers and surfers to avoid the water regardless of how good the waves might look. McCrory also declared a state of emergency for 25 coastal and adjoining counties. "Our major goal is to ensure that no lives are lost during this upcoming storm," including those of emergency workers, McCrory said. But the next day, even as the storm gathered strength, McCrory said: "Of course, this holiday weekend, the July 4th weekend, is one of the biggest weekends for coastal tourism in the state, and we anticipate a beautiful weekend after the Tropical Storm Arthur or the Hurricane Arthur is out of North Carolina." Some visitors stayed put, hopeful the fast-moving storm would follow predictions to pass through by Friday afternoon. About 20 miles north of the only bridge off Hatteras, Sean Fitzgerald and his 5-year-old son, Cade, enjoyed a sunny morning lounging in beach chairs in the town of Kill Devil Hills. The sand was dotted with tourists. A handful of surfers took to the water. Like all areas north of Oregon Inlet, Kill Devils Hills wasn't under an evacuation. Fitzgerald said he saw no need to disrupt his family's vacation. "I plan to sit on the beach as long as the sun is here," then head out for a seafood dinner, said Fitzgerald, 44, of Fairfax, Virginia. The National Hurricane Center predicted Arthur would swipe the North Carolina coast early Friday with winds of up to 85 mph and then be off the coast of New England later in the day, eventually making landfall in Canada's maritime provinces as a tropical storm. Outer Banks residents and out-of-town visitors who fail to evacuate ahead of the hurricane's expected arrival should prepare for possibly getting stuck for several days without food, water or power, National Hurricane Center forecaster Stacy Steward said Thursday. "We want the public to take this system very seriously, go ahead and start their preparations because time is beginning to run out," he said. The first named storm of the Atlantic season prompted a hurricane warning for much of the North Carolina coast. Tropical storm warnings were in effect for coastal areas in South Carolina and Virginia. On the Outer Banks' Ocracoke Island, accessible only by ferry, a voluntary evacuation was under way. Officials, hotel owners and would-be vacationers as far north as New England were also carefully watching forecasts. The storm was enough of a concern that officials in Boston decided to move the annual Boston Pops July 4th concert and fireworks show up by a day because of potential heavy rain Friday night. And rip tides were a threat as far north as New Jersey. One of the Outer Banks visitors who planned to leave Thursday was Gary Reinhardt, 63, of Sarasota, Florida. "I'm worried about the road. It took way too long to get here," he said, a reference to the two-and-a-half hours it took him and his wife, Lori Reinhardt, to get onto the island last Sunday in normal summertime traffic, when no storms were in sight. Other areas of the Outer Banks were taking a cautious, but still-optimistic approach: No evacuations had been ordered for areas north of Hatteras, including the popular town of Kill Devil Hills, which was the site of the Wright brothers' first controlled, powered airplane flights in December 1903. Nancy Janitz, 60, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, said she was ready, thanks to technology.

USA National Soccer Team's Next Generation

USA National Soccer Team's Next Generation
Today News In USA - Earlier, Argentina outlasted Switzerland, 1-0 in extra time. Despite Tim Howard flying all over the place, the United States bowed out of the World Cup on Tuesday with a 2-1 extra-time loss to Belgium in the round of 16. For starters, the team’s 10 MLS players will fly back to the States to rejoin their professional clubs over the next few days (midfielder Mix Diskerud also will rejoin Rosenborg in Norway’s professional league, which follows roughly the same schedule as MLS). For the national team, the only match on the immediate schedule is a Sept. 3 friendly against the Czech Republic in Prague. The first window for international matches in 2015 is March 23-31. The winner will play the United States — the 2013 Gold Cup winner — for the right to play in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. If the United States wins the 2015 Gold Cup, it automatically clinches the right to play in the Confederations Cup, the eight-team tournament that is considered a rehearsal for the next World Cup. Expect a U.S. roster filled with mostly untested players at the Gold Cup.

The USA National Soccer Team will host the 2016 Copa America Centenario, the annual South American tournament that also will feature six CONCACAF teams. Then there’s the 2016 Olympics, also in Brazil, assuming the group of younger American players qualifies. Soon after the Copa America ends in June 2016, the Americans will begin two-stage qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Turns out, Juergen Klinsmann was correct after all. The U.S. scored once, the first goal against Belgium at the Cup outside of a penalty kick. With gradual upgrades of Major League Soccer, the World Cup's prep school for many Americans, and proper placement of worthy players overseas, plus more coaches on the youth level who can knowledgeably instruct and are not just the well-meaning parents of the left midfielder. Of more immediate concern, while Team USA players justifiably can pop their shirt buttons out of pride, those aiming for the next World Cup must consider a sobering thought.

New Hot Scene With Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz
Today News In USA - In her new movie “Hot Tape,” Cameron Diaz gets hot on camera for the first time. It’s just a part of the role. “It’s a weird job, right?” the actress said. “I found myself in a room in the middle of nowhere Massachusetts at 11:00 at night doing a childbirth scene, and everybody’s screaming at one another — Jason, the cameramen, the director. Crazy s—t, right? A fun job.’” “I love it. Fear, mostly. You just don’t worry that time registers anything awful.” The 41-year-old actress stunned in a series of shots for the August issue of Esquire magazine and opened up about stripping down completely nude for new film "Hot Tape" and her life decision to not have children. Despite having to sacrifice showing some skin in the name of the job, Diaz described acting to Esquire as "weird" but "great." "It's a weird job, right?" the star said. A fun job.'"

How a Tropical Storm Arthur Forms Off Florida

Today News In USA - With a holiday weekend on the horizon, the National Hurricane Center says the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is gradually becoming more organized off Florida. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says a tropical storm watch is in effect for the state's east coast, from Fort Pierce to Flagler Beach. As of early Tuesday afternoon, the storm was located 80 miles east-southeast of Cape Canaveral, reports CBS Miami. It was moving to the northwest at near 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of near 40 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center says Arthur is expected to strengthen in the next 48 hours. The storm is forecast to produce rainfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, mainly across the eastern Florida peninsula. A tropical storm watch was in effect for a swath of Florida's east coast, and the National Hurricane Center in Miami urged those as far north as parts of Virginia to monitor Arthur's path. Off Florida's Space Coast beaches - the closest to Arthur - the sky was cloudy and winds fairly normal, said Eisen Witcher, assistant chief of Brevard County Ocean Rescue. Red flags warned of rough surf, and beachgoers were advised to get into the water only in areas with manned lifeguard stands. But overall, Witcher said, "it's business as usual." Red flags also flew at Daytona Beach. By mid-day, a dozen swimmers had been aided by lifeguards when they got caught in a rip current. On any given day, 15 to 20 swimmers need help, said Tammy Marris, spokeswoman for the Volusia County Beach Patrol. There were no official warnings for other states, but forecasters started to warn of rain, heavy surf and swells, and potential rip tides. The hurricane arthur center urged those all the way north to parts of Virginia to monitor Arthur's progress.

On North Carolina's Outer Banks, the motel Shutters on the Banks is completely booked for the holiday weekend, general manager John Zeller said, despite National Weather Service forecasts for potentially heavy rain, gusty winds and isolated tornadoes late Thursday and Friday. "We have received some cancellations but not too many," he said. "Basically we are telling people to kind of wait and see what happens. We're a little too far out at this point. I think everybody is kind of watching the weather." He said the motel has a 72-hour advance notice on cancellations but will waive it if the storm's track head toward the area or warnings are issued. In Folly Beach, South Carolina, dozens of people fished from the pier under sunny skies Tuesday. Others surfed on the gentle swells, sunbathed and looked for shells. In Savannah, rooms in the downtown historic district were expected to be at least 80 percent full for the Fourth of July weekend, when crowds back the beach on neighboring Tybee Island. Hotel managers and vacation rental owners were watching forecasts, hoping the storm will stay off Georgia's 100-mile coastline. Cancellations aren't when storms approach, but those calls weren't coming in Tuesday afternoon, Marinelli said. Tropical Storm Arthur was expected to begin a northwestward motion on Tuesday followed by a turn to the north on Wednesday, CBS Miami reports. On the forecast track it will remain offshore and move east of the Florida coastline during the next day or so.
