Happy Cinco De Mayo

Cinco De Mayo, Happy
Cinco De Mayo
MSNBC has apologized for airing a Cinco de Mayo segment that included a sombrero-wearing, tequila-swilling correspondent Louis Burgdorf. "On Monday, Cinco De Mayo, ‘Way Too Early’ made sarcastic references to the way some Americans celebrate the holiday. Alex Korson, the executive producer for "Morning Joe" and "Way Too Early," also called NAHJ president Hugo Balta on Monday to apologize for the segment, according to Balta. The segment began with "Way Too Early" host Thomas Roberts and sombrero-clad Burgdorf talking about the White House Correspondents' Dinner and ended with Roberts explaining the origins of the holiday while Burgdorf danced around him taking swigs from a bottle of tequila. If you didn't already know, Cinco de Mayo is a bigger deal in the United States than in Mexico. Here, this unofficial holiday is almost as popular as, oh, St. Patrick's Day -- which means it's unfortunately become a drinking holiday. So much so that it's been nicknamed, Cinco de Drinko and even Gringo de Mayo. Eek.

1. Happy Cinco de Mayo, said no Mexican ever

2. Enjoy traditional Mexican libations, but don't use Cinco de Mayo as an excuse to get brutally inebriated

3. Avoid using your high school level Spanish with native Spanish speakers today

4. Don't plan a trip to Mexico to celebrate a 'real' Cinco de Mayo Outside of the state of Puebla in Mexico, the holiday isn't really celebrated at all. If you're genuinely interested in Mexico, head to San Diego, San Antonio or even Mexico City on September 16 and indulge in an authentic experience in all things Mexican.
